FREESTLEMANIA BIOGRAPHY: TKA

TKA

The Puerto Rican group TKA also known as Tony, Kayel and Aby were one of Freestyle's most influential groups and to this day remains Freestyle's greatest group.

In 1986 TKA released "Scars of Love", their debut album which spawned six hit singles in a row and helped to define and popularize the Latin hip-hop freestyle sound for the next four years. This streak of hits gave them the title "Kings of Freestyle" for the 80's.

In late 1989-90 when freestyle was going through a transitional phase to compete with the new pop sound, TKA also decided to try other sounds on their second album "Louder Than Love". Luckily they didn't totally abandon freestyle, tracks like "Louder Than Love" was a new sound but still "freestyle". It became the biggest hit of their career.

In 1992 a "TKA's Greatest Hits" album was released combining the best of their two albums. Unfortionatly TKA split up and no longer continued to make music for another 8 years. However, Kayel, TKA's most energetic member, ventured out on his own and form the group known as K7. His project spawned 2 hit singles that rose the charts, "Swing Batta Swing" and "Come Baby Come." Though this album sold over 500,000 copies it still did not capture the flame that he once had with TKA.

In 2000, TKA reunited once again with their long time producer, Joey Gardner, and have record and released a new single "When Will I See You Again". This new single has taken many forms and can be virtually heard all over the internet. However, no album has been released and due to several dates being pushed back, it has hard to say when their next album will be out. Currently, they are no longer working with their long time producer, Joey Gardner, and are currently signed with Prestige Records. Keep an eye out for these guys sometime this year!!
